Newspaper collection : broadsides, 1665-1882.

Pages from various early newspapers including 6 from England, 3 from Hawaii and 3 from the United States. The earliest English paper is The Oxford gazette (Jan. 11-Feb. 15, 1665 edition), the year of the newspaper's inception. This newspaper became The London Gazette and two examples are included, dated Apr. 9-12,1666 and Nov. 22-26, 1705. Three other English papers in the collection are the Norwich mercury dated Mar. 14, 1789; The oracle dated Dec. 18, 1791; and The morning post and daily advertiser dated Aug. 17, 1776. One of the earliest Hawaiian language newspapers is included, Ke Kumu Hawaii, July 22, 1835, pages 113-120; also in Hawaiian, Ka Hae Hawaii, Malaki 5, 1856. These papers were commissioned by missionary groups. A third paper in English, The Friend, January 1, 1878, was founded by a Protestant Reverend, Samuel Chenery Damon. A carnival edition of the New Orleans, Times-Democrat, February 16, 1882, called a parade paper and when opened is about the size of a double newspaper. It features lithographs of different floats, this one highlighting the Knights of Momus. Also included are two sheets from The Visalia Weekly Delta, August 25, 1860 and March 9, 1861.

Samuel Chenery Domon was editor of "The Friend," a serial devoted to temperance and mariners, from 1845 to 1884.
